The sword blade is embedded in distinct tsuba shaped like a black flame with a crimson center and deep red edges. The original sword in the anime is said to be extremely sharp and can cut through even the toughest of materials; its tanto version also looks like it has the same characteristics. However, the Tanto Black Nichirin is only available with dulled edges for safe handling, but it can be used as a letter opener.
